Writer
of action adventure swashbucklers and a pioneer of science fiction
in Italy, Emilio Salgari was born in Verona on August 21, 1862,
to a family of modest merchants. When his dream to captain his own
vessel and explore the world was shattered by poor marks at a naval
institute in Venice, he turned his passion for exploration and discovery
to writing. He wrote more than two hundred adventure stories and
novels, many of which are considered classics. Setting his tales
in exotic locations, with heroes from a wide variety of cultures,
Mr. Salgari used his powerful imagination to bring the wonders of
the world to the doorstep of generations of readers.
Enormously popular,
Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French author and pioneer
of the science fiction genre. Verne's stories, written for adolescents
as well as adults, caught the enterprising spirit of the 19th century
and its uncritical fascination with scientific progress. Many of
his ideas have been hailed as prophetic; his novels explored space,
air and underwater travel long before they became commonplace. Verne's
oeuvre includes 65 novels, some 20 short stories and essays, 30
plays, some geographical works, and several opera librettos. His
novels have inspired 120 feature films.
